U14 East Lothian Junior Badminton Championships

U14 East Lothian Junior Badminton Championships

After some very exciting and closely fought matches Naomi Branford (West Lothian) emerged as the only double winner at Meadowmill Sports Centre last week end.

In the girls singles Branford had some fairly comfortable matches up to the final where she was then up against top seed Kiera Waddell (Borders) who she toppled 21/14 21/13 to win her first title. They both teamed up together in the girls’ doubles with Branford taking her second title with a win over Edinburgh duo Lauren Page and Zazou Wycherley.

The final of the boy’s singles was contested by Eugene Stokes (Borders) and East Lothian local player from North Berwick James Guckian. Stokes played some excellent matches throughout the day having beaten top seed Alastair Campbell at the semi final stage and in the final he was just too consistent for Guckian who he defeated 21/17 21/12.

There was also local interest in the boys doubles with top seeds Alastair Campbell (Dunbar) and John Arbuckle (North Berwick) living up to their seeding position by winning the title after a very hard fought three set match 18/21 21/12 21/18 against Glasgow School of Sport pairing Calvin Chan and Alexander McGarrie.

East Lothian Badminton Development Officer Christine Black would like to thank all the volunteers and parents who assisted and supported the tournament and to all the players who provided some excellent and exciting badminton throughout the day.
