PAiS athletes Roan Frostwick and Cameron Pike speak to the U10 and U12s about life in PAIS.
Last month East Lothian Hockey Development Officer, Fiona Harfield, organised a performance pathway evening for the parents and players of the U10 and U12 Hockey Development squads. The purpose of the evening was to educate them on the pathway from club hockey to international hockey and what is involved.
The focus was on the important work that junior clubs do and their impact on the development squads, the selection processes for all the hockey squads at each age group including PAiS and how the performance pathway in East Lothian fits in with that of Scottish Hockey.
The evening was a huge success with so many parents and athletes attending. The highlight was an honest report by North Berwick High School and Dunbar Grammar pupils Roan Frostwick and Cameron Pike on the transition from the U12 Development squad to PAiS. They spoke eloquently about the commitment required to be part of the performance programme and how they manage school work on top of their busy hockey schedule and other sports that they participate in.
At 14 Roan has been in PAiS for three years and in this time he has represented and captained the U14 Boys East squad, played at U15 district level and has been selected to for the boys U16 Scotland Development squad. Cameron who is in his first year at the Grammar will be taking part in his first district trials in March and is coached at Dunbar Junior Hockey Club.
Roan's mum Allie also spoke candidly about the commitment that parents need. This includes providing a taxi service 6 days a week, travelling to every hockey pitch in Edinburgh, being number one fan and chief cook, there to celebrate the successes and their to mend the heartache. It's a tough job for all concerned said Allie but you do it for your children because you need to give them every opportunity to succeed, whatever level that is.
Thanks to eveyone who supported the evening especially to Roan and Cameron who were amazing!
