As the countdown and preparations to the IPC World Championships continue, Team East Lothian’s Maria Lyle has been showing fine form at the CAU Inter Counties Championships. Competing in the 100m at Bedford, Lyle had a very strong race – just one hundredth of a second outside her personal best. The T35 double European champion clocked a time of 14.38s (+0.2m/s) in the 100m, before then going on to run a personal best in the 200m the following day. Lyle took over half a second off her 200m best, with a fine run of 30.00s.
Exactly a year on from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Scotland’s future talents were gracing the exact same track for the Celtic Games international match. The match is now in it’s 40th year and features an Under-18 and Under-16 team against Scotland’s Celtic neighbours Ireland and Wales. It was another opportunity for two of East Lothian’s athletes to don the Scotland vests for the second time this season. Cameron Steven, competing for the Scotland U18 futures team, toed up to the line in the 800m. It what transpired to be a tactical race, Steven took on the pace in the blustery conditions – it was a brave tactical move in a strong field, with Scottish record holder Ben Greenwood, and Irish ace Mark Milner outsprinting Steven in the closing stages. The Dunbar pupil finished third with a time of 1:57.56.
Kate Johnstone, competing for the Scotland Under-16 team had a good run over the 200m, finishing third and just outside her personal best with a time of 25.67 (2.2m/s). Kate was also part of the Under-16 mixed 4x100m relay team who finished top of the podium.
Gullane’s Emily Dudgeon was in action in Belgium at a Flanders Cup over weekend. The East Lothian Commonwealth Games athlete had a good run, despite a very a congested field in 800m. Dudgeon recorded her third fastest time ever, with her performance of 2:02.28.
There was a strong showing from Team East Lothian at the final CSSAL match in Kilmarnock with over 50 athletes competing for the club on the day. The final points are still being calculated and results scrutinised, but a number of personal bests recorded and wins for Team East Lothian athletes.
