On Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7thJune Dunbar Grammar School, with the help and support from Active Schools, ran a two day cross curricular Rich Task event based around the Olympics.

On the 6th the whole school took part in a torch relay which involved each of the school’s five Houses accompanying our very own Olympic torch around Dunbar.  In the afternoon the whole school, plus invited guests, were involved in our Opening Ceremony.  This included a parade of the Houses (who each represented their chosen country) around the playing fields. There was drama, dance and musical performances as well as an opening address by our two Young Sports Ambassadors, Ailsa MacKenzie and Jenny MacMillan. A fancy dress competition was also held, in which each of the Houses were represented by their chosen (or self-designed) mascot. Other activities for the afternoon included the five Houses making a physical representation of the Olympic rings, the selling of Olympic items by students as part of an enterprise task and a student/teacher inter-house event.

On Thursday 7th all students in S1, S2 and S3 participated in a variety of Olympic activities throughout the day as part of an Olympic inter-house competition.

The activities were held at the following venues:

DGS -                  archery, cycling, cyclo-cross, fencing and giant heptathlon

Hallhill -               racquetball, handball and hockey

Winterfield -         tennis, volleyball, boccia and tug-of-war

Keith Cook, the British Fencer, who completed in the Beijing Olympics and who is hoping to qualify for London 2012 this week, demonstrated the skills involved in fencing to our students.  Also involved in our Opening Ceremony and activities on the Thursday were international hurdler Alan Scott plus local football Paralympian Blair Glynn.
