East Lothian U18 Girls Win National Shield

East Lothian U18 girls rugby team beat Balfron High School to win U18 Girls National Schools Shield Final

U18 Girls Shield Final

Scotstoun in Glasgow was the venue for the Girls National Schools Rugby Finals event which was held on Friday 9th December. Games included the U15 National Cup and Shield Final as well as the U18 Cup and Shield Final. The East Lothian U18 girls have recently come off a successful fixture against Borders U18 girls and were really looking forward to playing in the National U18 Shield Final against Balfron High School. A large majority of the girls come from Ross High with a couple from Knox Academy. The girls had some support from Lismore who also contributed some players to the team.

In what turned out to be a high scoring and entertaining game, East Lothian ran out eventual winners 43-20 after leading 29-5 at half time. One of the East Lothian tries started from their own try line and included almost all the girls handling the ball in the lead up to the try. It was a great advert for the girls’ game. Unfortunately there were a couple illegal tackles that weren’t dealt with as they perhaps could have been, but on the whole, it was a great experience for all the girls involved and hopefully the start of many more trips to the Girls National Schools Finals Event. A big thank you must go to Mike Davidson, the Ross High Rugby DO who has taken on the lead coach role for the girls and succeeded in creating a great environment for the girls to enjoy their rugby. His commitment has been unwavering throughout the season.
