Rugby players aim to keep fit over the summer

Rugby

As many athletes begin to ease off for the summer, a group of 25 rugby enthusiasts from S1 have upped the training as part of Knox’s “School of Rugby” programme.  “School of Rugby” is a programme developed by the SRU using CashBack for Communities money to provide additional rugby development for pupils in S1 & S2.

Pupils were asked to apply for a place on the programme, and 25 were selected to receive additional coaching and conditioning training from Haddington Rugby Development Officer Scott Marnoch.  The programme is no walk in the park; pupils train Monday and Wednesday after school, as well as a pre-school conditioning session on Tuesdays and a lunchtime skills session on Thursdays.  In addition, pupils are given 1 period out of class on a Friday morning to complete various teamwork exercises to develop qualities such as cooperation, respect, self-motivation which are necessary for on park success in rugby, as well as benefiting pupils in other aspects of life.  Pupils will also receive health & nutrition information from qualified sports nutritionists to allow them to make healthy lifestyles choices.

The group will continue after the summer holidays as they move into S2, and a new group of S1 pupils will begin the programme.
