The first PTS Football game of 2017 heats up the freezing conditions at Forrester Park.
The first PTS Football event of the year hit Tranent on Thursday night (9th February) and even despite the freezing conditions, the performances on the pitch were enough to keep everyone warmed up!
The first lot of games saw Windygoul (A) breeze past a developing Macmerry Primary side after a few goals in the first few minutes. Macmerry did put up a strong fight in the middle of the game before a few more goals towards the end ensured Windygoul finished off the match in style (8-0). On the other pitch however and incredible goal keeping performance in the first half saw St Martins lead against them by only 2 goals at half time. A string of incredible saves from P7 Adam Gillie kept the game as a contest, however a fine superb “top corner” finishes from St Martin’s attacking players finished the game at a 4-0 win.
The next 2 games however were the most evenly matched games PTS Football has ever seen, with Windygoul (B) playing Macmerry and in-form Windygoul (A) playing St Martins who were also flying high. Macmerry worked hard for the first half and were rewarded with a great team goal early in the first half, with Windygoul equalising just before half time. The second half had all the parents biting their finger nails with Windygoul even hitting the crossbar in the final stages with a superb long range strike. This wasn’t enough to break the deadlock though and the game finished honours even at 1-1.
The highlight of the evening was St Martins v Windygoul (A). On every PTS Football night these are the two teams to beat and finally they got to put the “we are gonna beat you” argument to bed. With superb attacking from both teams the score was levelled at 1-1 going into half-time, with both teams also narrowly missing on several occasions and even both hitting the woodwork. A goal a piece in the second half left the last few minutes as an incredible contest. St Martins tricky winger Marcus Grogan was fouled on the edge of the penalty area in the dying seconds, but even this couldn’t break the deadlock as the freekick had beaten the keeper, but just fell to the outside of the far post. The game ended 2-2 with all coaches and parents applauding the performances of all the players .
The next round of PTS Football in Tranent will take place on the 23rd of March at Forrester’s Park. Active Schools Coordinators from across East Lothian are also organising a Girls School Football Event at Pinkie Playing fields on the 6th of March so the girls can get in on the PTS action as well.
