Stephen Clegg smashes British Record
East Lothian Swim Team swimmer Stephen Clegg smashed the British Record in the 100m Backstroke at the recent British Para-Swimming International Champonships.
Stephen (19) competes in the S13 category (visual impairment) and is captain of the East Lothian Swim Team.
Stephen swam a Scottish record in the same event just 10 days before, a personal best for the swimmer. Excelling at the British Championships, Clegg swam another best time, beating the long standing British record by over two seconds in a time of 1.05.12. This time also secured his place in the final.
Clegg also finalled in the 50m and 100m freestyle events, taking 6 seconds off his 100m time and almost 2 seconds off his 50m time.
Stehen's team mate Christian Buchanan made an impressive debut at this level of competition. The 13 year old competed in the S14 category (learning disability) and competed in 5 events at the meet. Buchanan cut his 100m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke PB's by 8 seconds, a huge amount at this distance. His 100m Breaststroke time was a 4 second personal best, while knocking 2 seconds off his 50m Freestyle and 200 Individual Medley times.
Christian's talent in the pool is being recognised and he has been selected for the Scottish National Disability Junior Squad, training with them once a month in Stirling.
