Two National Titles for Rachel

Musselburgh’s Rachel Cameron celebrated last week end by winning two titles at the U15 Scottish Junior National Badminton Championships held at Motherwell’s Ravenscraig Sport Facility.

Top seed Cameron took the girls singles by defeating second seed Rachel Sugden (Alexandria) after winning a fierce 3 set battle. Sugden won the first set 21- 17 and was 20-13 up in the second set when Cameron made a tremendous comeback saving 7  match points to win the set 23-21 and showed control in the third set by winning 21-17 to take her first National title.

Cameron then teamed up with Edinburgh’s Rachel Andrew as the top seeds and won her second title in the girls doubles beating second seeds Sugden and Maria Leith (Stonehaven) 21-19 21-8.

Cameron reached her third final in mixed doubles with Joshua Apilliga (Glasgow) but just lost out at the last hurdle to top seeds Adam Pringle (Giffnock) and Rachel Andrew 21-12 21-12.

In the U15 boys doubles Alastair Campbell (Dunbar) and James Guckian (North Berwick) reached the semi final stage where they lost to Edinburgh’s Michael Farnood and Eugene Stokes (Duns) 21-15 21-18.

In the U19 age group 16 year old Shona Whillans (Longniddry) reached the semi final stages of both doubles events, with Dundee’s Lauren Middleton in the girl’s doubles and Edinburgh’s Glen Lewington in the mixed doubles.
