Weather doesn’t dampen spirits at East Lothian Primary Athletics

Fine perfoamnces and record breaking form at Primary Athletics

Primary Athletics

Despite the dull and overcast conditions at Meadowbank, spirits were high for the East Lothian Primary Inter-Schools Athletics Competition. There were some fine performances too, with five records broken – the oldest from 1989.

In the morning session in the ‘Large Schools’ competition Law Primary were on record breaking form. Cameron Issac (Law Primary) equalled the P6 Boys’ record of 4m15 in the long jump. In the P6 Boys’ 150m, Owen Ashall (Law Primary) ran 21.49s to break the record and in the P7 Girls’ 150m the record fell in the heats, with Caitlin Street (Law Primary) running 21.44s. Sanderson’s Wynd pupil, Catrina McManus set a new 600m record in the P6 Girls’ competition with a time of 1min 54sec.

In the afternoon ‘Small Schools’ session Kieran Lough (St Gabriel’s) broke the criket ball throw record, with a throw of 49m40.

The eventual winner of the morning session in the Large, Large Schools’ competition was Law Primary School with Dunbar in second and King’s Meadow in third. In the Small Large Schools’ competition it was Stoneyhill who came home with the silverware, closely followed by Musselburgh Burgh for second and Gullane in third. In the afternoon session for Small Schools’ competition Aberlady came out top, with East Linton in second and Yester in third. It was a four-way tie in the Small, Small Schools’ competition with Athelstaneford, Macmerry, West Barns and Whitecraig all sharing the team trophy.

A special thanks to Gordon Mackenzie and the Primary PE Specialists team for organising the event, and to all the volunteers, teachers and schools who helped on the day.
